Christians fear "ethnic cleansing" in northern Iraq

Mosul, Aug. 16, 2007 (CWNews.com) - A violent campaign against the Yazidi ethnic group in northern Iraq has raised fears that local Christians may be next to suffer, the AsiaNews service reports.

In a region dominated by Islamic zealots, in the absence of Iraqi or American troops, a series of bombs hit Yazidi villages in the area around Mosul this week, killing as many as 500 people. General Benjamin Mixon, who leads US forces in northern Iraq, described the bombings as "an act of ethnic cleansing." AsiaNews sources. Sources in Iraq warned AsiaNews that the attacks were part of a wider plan that is likely to be extended to the Christian villages in the Nineveh plain.
