Velehrad, Czech Republic – From 28 June to 1 July 2007, at the initiative of Patriarch Lubomyr (Husar), head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC), and Roman Catholic Archbishop Jan Graubner of Olomouc, Czech Republic, the Velegrad Congress “For deeper solidarity between Christians in Europe,” was conducted. It assembled Catholic and Orthodox theologians from all over the continent.
This was on the 100th anniversary of the first Velehrad Congress, initiated by UGCC head Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky and Roman Catholic Archbishop of Olomouc Antonin Cyril Stojan. This year’s congress drew attention to topics like Christian identity and the new evangelization of Europe, as well as “healing wounds, cleansing memory and the need for reconciliation, and the importance and urgency of solidarity and friendship,” according to the organizers.
UGCC bishops from Ukraine, Poland, France, Germany and Italy, as well as noted theologians and church activists participated. The second day of the congress started with a prayer led by Metropolitan Stephanos (Charalambides) of Estonia of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople.
Among the participants of the event were the leaders of the Institute of Ecumenical Studies and others from the Ukrainian Catholic University in western Ukrainian Lviv.
