GUIZHOU, China, SEPT. 10, 2007 (Zenit.org).- The state-approved church of China has a new bishop who has received Vatican approval.
A notice was read at all Sunday Masses that Father Paolo Xiao Zejiang's ordination as the new coadjutor bishop of the Diocese of Guizhou, southern China, has Holy See approval, AsiaNews reported.
He was ordained Saturday in the Guiyang Cathedral in front of 3,000 people, 40 priests and five bishops.
This ordination is the first to take place since the publication of Benedict XVI's letter to China's Catholics, released in late June.
AsiaNews reported that weeks ahead of the ordination, Catholics had spread the word about the Vatican approval of the new bishop.
