Carmelites Elect Prior General

ROME, SEPT. 18, 2007 (Zenit.org).- The Carmelites of the Ancient Observance elected Father Fernando Millán Romeral as the prior general of the order.

The congregation is meeting in general chapter in Sassone, Italy, through Saturday. The election was last Thursday.

The new prior general was elected in the first round of voting, by 70 votes out of a possible 82.

At the time of his election, Father Millán, 45, was a theology professor at the Pontifical University of Comillas in Madrid, Spain, and a member of the Carmelite Institute in Rome. He was also a formation counselor of his religious province and has authored various books.

The Carmelites are present in 42 countries. They number about 2,000 priests and brothers in 23 provinces and 800 cloistered nuns in 78 monasteries.
