Lviv – A press conference dedicated to a new edition of the Bible, translated by Ivan Khomenko, including corrections, introduced by a special work group and approved by a committee in Rome, took place at the Ukrainian Catholic University (UCU) in western Ukraine’s Lviv on 22 October 2007.
Patriarch Lubomyr (Husar), head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC), participated in the book presentation. Three publishing houses - Svichado, Missioner and the publishing house of the Ukrainian Biblical Society – worked on the new Bible publication. RISU’s Ukrainian-language webpage posted the story.
Patriarch Husar, who blessed the publication, said: “We would like all faithful of the Church to read the Holy Gospel which should be accessible for all…”
Sister Luisa Tsupa, head of UCU’s Catechetical-Pedagogical Institute, as well as the Patriarchal Catechization Committee and the Biblical Apostolate Fund, noted: “The Synod of Bishops of the UGCC, headed by Reverend Patriarch Husar, delegated the BAF, together with the Catechization Committee of our church, to work on the publication of the Bible. Since 2001 one of our projects has been to introduce Bible reading in the parishes and different communities. We have now developed curriculum and seminars for training teachers to conduct Bible studies in the parishes.”
According to Fr. Taras Barshchevskyi, assistant head of the Catechization Pedagogical Institute of UCU, member of the Biblical Apostolate Fund (BAF) and a participant of the work group, “The new edition is of ecumenical character. It includes particular contributions of Catholics and Protestants, with indications of whose those are.” Moreover, Fr. Barshchevskyi stressed that the novelty of this Bible edition is that it “restores historical justice and indicates the name of the translator.”
