Lviv—The prefect of the Congregation for the Oriental Churches, Cardinal Leonardo Sandri, arrived in western Ukrainian Lviv on 10 July 2008. Upon visiting St. George’s Cathedral, he held a press conference in the metropolitan’s residence. There journalists mostly raised the question of the Patriarchate of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC) and the process of beatification of Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky. Regarding the UGCC patriarchate, the Vatican diplomat stressed that this question is solely within the competence of the Pope and that in solving it one should take into account “the consequences of the proclamation of the patriarchate in the ecumenical sense.”
